CBD Isolate, Distillate, Crystal, and Terpsolate Compared

Isolate, distillate, crystal, and terpsolate are often grouped under “concentrates,” but the words do not describe the same thing.
- Isolate points toward a highly refined material centered on one named cannabinoid.
- Distillate points toward a refined extract and a processing category.
- Crystal describes a physical solid form or a product naming convention.
- Terpsolate is a non-standard marketplace term generally used for an isolate-and-terpene combination.
None of those names, by itself, establishes exact composition, purity, THC status, contaminants, ingredients, or suitability. The product specification and batch report must do that work.

The most important column is the third one.
Isolate: one named cannabinoid is the center of the claim
An isolate product is usually presented around one cannabinoid, such as CBD isolate, CBG isolate, or CBN isolate. The material may appear as a powder or crystalline solid.
“Isolate” does not automatically mean 100%, pharmaceutical grade, contaminant-free, or absolutely free of every other cannabinoid. Those are separate claims.
On the batch COA, check:
- exact sample name and batch;
- the primary cannabinoid result;
- whether the result is percent, mg/g, or another unit;
- other cannabinoids included in the method;
- ND entries and their reporting limits;
- residual-solvent testing when provided;
- metals, pesticides, microbes, or other panels when provided; and
- method notes, dilution, and qualifications.
A fine white appearance cannot prove that a powder is CBD, CBG, or CBN. Identity and composition require documentation and analytical measurement.
Distillate: process category does not fix the formula
Distillation can separate and concentrate compounds based on physical properties under controlled conditions. In cannabinoid processing, it is one operation within a longer chain that can also include extraction, filtration, winterization, chromatography, or other purification steps.
A seller may use “distillate” for a thick refined extract. But the term does not establish one cannabinoid percentage or one spectrum.
Two distillates can differ in:
- dominant cannabinoid;
- secondary cannabinoids;
- acidic versus neutral cannabinoid content;
- color and viscosity;
- ingredients or added terpenes;
- residual-solvent profile;
- processing history; and
- batch documentation.
Do not infer the extraction solvent, still type, temperatures, or proprietary process from the product name. If those facts matter, they need an approved specification from the manufacturer.
Starting-material and finished-material reports are different
A processor may test an input extract, an intermediate fraction, and a finished packaged material at different stages. Those reports can all be valid while describing different compositions.
Check the sample matrix and description. A COA for “crude extract,” “distillate,” or “CBD input” should not be presented as the finished-batch report for a formulated product unless the documented chain clearly supports that relationship.
The final material can differ after additional purification, blending, terpene addition, dilution, or packaging. If the storefront sells the finished material, the most directly relevant document identifies that finished material and batch.
Isolate and distillate are not purity rankings
It is tempting to arrange the terms on a simple ladder: crude extract, distillate, isolate. Real processing can include multiple operations, and the word used on a storefront is not a laboratory grade.
An isolate can have a high measured concentration of one cannabinoid while lacking a contaminant panel. A distillate can have a broader cannabinoid profile with well-documented testing. Neither name answers every quality question.
Compare evidence by field:

Crystal: physical form is not complete identity
CBD, CBG, CBN, and other cannabinoids can form crystalline solids. Researchers have characterized cannabinoid crystal structures and, for CBD, more than one crystal form.
That chemistry does not make every product called “crystal” interchangeable. “CBD crystal” could describe crystallized CBD isolate, but a photograph of crystals does not establish:
- which cannabinoid is present;
- whether the material contains one crystal form or a mixture;
- the measured percentage;
- residual solvents;
- added ingredients; or
- the applicable batch.
Crystals, powder, clumps, and changes in texture can also be affected by handling and storage. Visual form alone should not be used to declare a product authentic, defective, pure, or unsafe.
Terpsolate: read the ingredients, not the portmanteau
“Terpsolate” blends the words terpene and isolate. It is an industry trade term rather than a uniform federal product definition.
The name generally suggests a cannabinoid isolate combined with terpenes, but it does not answer:
- which isolate;
- which terpenes;
- botanical, cannabis-derived, or other source;
- individual terpene amounts or total percentage;
- whether other ingredients are present;
- whether the name refers to aroma, flavor, or composition; or
- which tests were performed on the finished mixture.
Strain-style or flavor names do not establish chemical equivalence to flower bearing the same name. A “Bubba Kush” or “Tangie” label on a terpene blend is not proof that the material came from that cultivar or reproduces its complete composition.
Use the ingredient specification and finished-batch COA. If only the isolate's original COA is available, that report does not automatically describe the finished terpene-containing mixture.

This table records published selector options, not current inventory. Crystal and terpsolate are explained here because readers encounter the terms in the wider market; this guide does not imply a current public IHF listing for either format.
Match the selected size to the documentation
A size selector describes net quantity, not concentration. A 1g and 25g option can share the same batch and specification, or they can be packaged from different material. The page should make the connection clear.
Check that:
- the selected gram amount appears in the cart;
- the package label matches the selected amount;
- the product and batch names match the report;
- the report's matrix describes the material being sold;
- a multi-page report remains consistent across pages; and
- historical or unrelated COAs are not being mistaken for the selected product.
Availability can differ by size. The existence of a 25g selector does not mean the 1g variant is available, and the presence of a report does not establish inventory.
Compare price on the same basis
If multiple sizes are available, divide the displayed item price by the selected grams to calculate a displayed price per gram. Use exact listed grams and the live price.
That calculation excludes shipping, tax, discounts, and other cart adjustments. It also says nothing about composition or documentation. A lower displayed price per gram does not compensate for an unmatched COA or an ingredient specification that is missing.
Do not compare a 1g isolate price with a 10g distillate price without identifying both the format and price basis. Different compositions are not interchangeable merely because both are sold by gram weight.
Read the cannabinoid table by unit
For concentrates and isolates, potency may be reported as percent by mass or milligrams per gram.
The relationship is:
1% by mass = 10 mg/g
A 98% result corresponds to 980 mg/g on the same mass basis. It does not mean 980mg in every package unless the net mass, fill, and batch relationship are also known.
If a laboratory reports a total, check how it was calculated. Do not add individual cannabinoids to a stated total without reading the method and notes. For THC and THCA, the calculation and legal context are explained in Total THC and THCA: How the Calculation Works—and Where It Does Not.
“ND” and “THC-free” need limits
An ND entry is not a statement of absolute zero. It means the analyte was not detected according to the laboratory's method and reporting threshold.
For a narrow-profile material, check which THC analytes were included and the laboratory's LOD or LOQ. A product title, isolate label, or broad-spectrum label should not replace that review.
The November 2026 federal amendment uses total-tetrahydrocannabinol and per-container language for certain finished products. A percent result on an ingredient COA is not automatically a final-container calculation.
Residual solvents and other panels
Processing names can make readers focus only on potency. A complete document review also asks which non-potency panels were performed.
Depending on the material, process, jurisdiction, and specification, relevant panels may include residual solvents, pesticides, heavy metals, microbes, mycotoxins, or other analytes. Do not infer a process solvent from a result table, and do not infer a passed panel when it is absent.
Separate these statements:
- not provided;
- not tested;
- tested and not detected;
- tested and below a stated limit;
- tested and passed a named specification; and
- tested and failed.
They describe different evidence.
Build a one-page specification record
For a technical material, retain the fields that make later comparison possible:

This record is especially important when a product name combines several concepts, such as broad-spectrum distillate or flavored terpsolate. Write down what the documents establish and leave unsupported fields blank.
Storage and condition
Concentrated materials can change viscosity, clump, crystallize, or change appearance with temperature, time, and composition. A physical change does not, by itself, prove contamination or failure.
Follow the current package instructions. Keep the original container and batch label. Do not apply heat, add ingredients, or attempt to reformulate a product based on a generic article.
If the received material differs unexpectedly from the listing or package, photograph it, preserve the batch information, keep it separate, and contact support for product-specific guidance.
Final comparison checklist
Before selecting a concentrate or isolate, confirm:
- exact product name and named cannabinoid;
- isolate, distillate, crystal, or terpsolate term;
- selected net weight;
- physical-form description;
- complete ingredient specification;
- matched batch or lot;
- cannabinoid results and units;
- ND, LOD, and LOQ details;
- provided and absent contaminant panels;
- current availability;
- destination rules; and
- package-specific storage directions.
The format name helps locate the product family. The specification and COA establish what was documented for the actual material.
