Gummies are becoming a popular method of CBD consumption simply because they are tasty, discreet, and portable. They’re also easy to dose as you only need to pop one in your mouth, and you’re good to go.
There are many vendors selling CBD gummy bears and edibles. But if you’re more mindful about what goes into your body, then you may consider making your own CBD gummies at home. This gives you control over the quality of cannabidiol and other ingredients used.
Below, we take you through the process of making CBD gummies with Jello. This particular recipe works well because it helps you create tasty gummies with:
Ideal texture & consistency
No separation
No sweating
What You’ll Need
Materials
Saucepan
Spatula
½ cup of water
¼ cup of cannabis oil
Whisk
Food-grade gummy molds
Ingredients
Jello – You can choose your preferred flavor. Jello typically comes in either a three or six-ounce package. For this recipe, we’ll use the three-ounce package.
Gelatin – We’ll use one ounce of gelatin. Note that gelatin adds texture to the gummies.
Cannabis-infused coconut oil – Gummies made using cannabis-infused coconut oil take up an increasingly opaque appearance, are denser, and have a creamy taste. We’ll use four ounces of cannabis-infused oil.
Sugar & citric acid – We want to coat the gummies with a sour taste, so we’ll combine citric acid and sugar.
Water or juice – You can use either of these, but you need to note that while juice brings more flavor, it is more prone to mold. So if you want your gummies to last longer, you should use water.
Recipe Instructions
Step 1
Pour half a cup of water into the saucepan. Switch on the oven and set it to low-medium heat because you don’t want it to cook too fast.
Add a quarter cup of the cannabis-infused coconut oil into the saucepan. Allow it to cook together with the water to a very light simmer. Note that heating cannabis (decarboxylation) releases useful compounds like CBD.
Step 2
Add an ounce of gelatin powder to the mixture in the saucepan. Give the mixture a whisk until everything is mixed together nicely.
Step 3
Next, add three ounces of Jello. Make sure you whisk the mixture immediately. That’s because you don’t want it to solidify immediately.
You’ll notice the mixture turning into a thick, green consistency. Continue whisking until the Jello is completely dissolved. Once dissolved, turn up the oven to medium heat so the mixture can start boiling. Let it simmer for five to eight minutes.
Step 4
Make sure to whisk and stop several times within the period of five to eight minutes. This helps to avoid burning.
Turn off the oven after the set time. The boiling mixture should have a thick consistency when you whisk it.
Step 5
It’s time to transfer the mixture from the saucepan into your gummy mold. You can use a mold of any size or shape when preparing homemade gummies. An ice cube tray is also a good alternative.
It’s imperative you do the transfer immediately because the mixture tends to solidify very quickly at room temperature.
To avoid spilling, first transfer the hot gummy liquid from the saucepan into a measuring cup, ideally with a spout. Then pour the mixture evenly into the respective holes in your mold tray.
Step 6
Put parchment paper underneath every filled mold tray. The parchment paper will help catch any accidental spills.
Once your mold is full, let it sit and set it in the freezer for 30 to 45 minutes. The freezer helps to solidify the thick, sticky gummies better.
Step 7
After the allotted time, remove the mold trays from the freezer. Spread parchment paper underneath and flip the mold tray so you can pop out the gummies easily.
Step 8
You may decide to air-dry these gummies or store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Many people opt to air dry their gummies for:
Better texture
Less moisture
Improved shelf stability
To effectively air dry, place the CBD gummies on a paper towel or parchment paper. Allow them to dry at room temperature for one to three days.
Of course, how long you leave them to air dry is your own choice. It will depend on your ideal texture and consistency. So keep tasting to find out if the gummies meet your taste standards.
Step 9
Scoop a half-cup full of regular white sugar and pour it into a clean bowl. Add a tablespoon and a half of citric acid and stir up the mixture. Toss the respective gummy pieces into the bowl containing the citric acid and sugar. The idea is to coat each piece of gummy in the mixture.
Step 10
Finally, your DIY CBD gummies made from Jello are ready. They should taste nice and thick with no wetness in between.
The Bottom Line
This CBD-Jello recipe is easy to follow and requires less time to be ready. It also gives you more control over the type of ingredients you use. Even better, you can adjust the strength of your treats by adding more or less cannabis-infused coconut oil into the mixture.
Note that if you intend to add sugar and citric acid to your CBD gummies, you should do so once they have completely air-dried. If you do this straight away after they’ve popped out of the molds, they’ll melt and turn into a wet mess.
